Abstract In the Arabic-speaking mahjar (diaspora), plight of working poor was focus women’s philanthropy. Scholarship on welfare relief in interwar Syrian, Lebanese, and Palestinian diaspora currently situates it within a gendered politics benevolence. This article reconsiders that frame argues for class-centered reassessment “ladies aid” exploring intersections with proletarian mutual aid strategies. Founded 1917, Syrian Ladies Aid Society (SLAS) Boston provided food, shelter, education, employment to workers. SLAS volunteers understood their efforts as mitigating precarities imposed workers by global capitalist labor system. Theirs both organization movement led women. Drawing from records American press, centers women processes working-class formation concludes history requires spaces social reproduction beyond factory floor.
